KERN VALLEY HOSPITAL

As you consider visiting or moving to the kern River Valley, one of your major concerns involves health care. We are proud of our small hospital and the physician staff that serves this area. This hospital is well equipped to serve your health care needs.

The Kern Valley Hospital District is a 27 bed acute care facility having 24 general acute and 3 ICU beds. In addition, there is a 74 bed Skilled Nursing Center. When this Skilled Nursing Center was built, a new surgical suite having three operating suites, a pre-op area, a seven bed post operative unit and a new dietary department (kitchen, food service area and dining room were added.

The emergency room is physician staffed twenty-four hours per day every day of the year. They handle very simple to very complex cases. Being a small hospital, they stay within their limits after initial treatment. If sophisticated treatment is required, such as heart surgery, patients are sent to Bakersfield usually by the local ambulance company or by helicopter (using the on site helipad).

PAST

The original hospital was approved in 1964 by the Kern County Board of Supervisors. Funds were provided through local taxes and the Federal "Hill-Burton Program". The hospital opened in 1968 with 24 beds. Over the years, the capacity of the hospital has increased.

FUTURE

The Hospital and Nursing Center will continue as an important health care resource for the citizens and visitors of the Kern River Valley. The physicians in and outside the Valley have a beautiful facility to perform their specialties. The Kern Valley Hospital will add new services whenever feasible.
